Malaysia Has the Foundation. The Next Step Is Building World-Class Race Properties

Malaysia has established one of the strongest technical foundations for road running in ASEAN, with the second-highest number of AIMS-certified race courses in the region.

But according to CheckPointSpot® Group CEO Benjamin Yeow, the next stage of development will require more than technically certified courses.

It will require an ecosystem capable of turning successful local races into internationally recognised sporting properties.

“Malaysia is not lacking in technical capability. What we need is an ecosystem that recognises the wider value created by international races — from sports tourism and destination branding to international exposure and economic impact,” said Benjamin.

While Malaysian organisers are already capable of delivering large-scale races with tens of thousands of participants, progressing towards higher World Athletics recognition requires significantly greater investment in areas such as elite athletes, prize money, anti-doping, international promotion, broadcasting, safety and event operations.

Benjamin believes this additional investment cannot rest solely on race organisers.

Building internationally recognised races requires closer collaboration between event organisers, government agencies, tourism bodies, sponsors, broadcasters, athletics authorities and industry partners.

The opportunity extends beyond sport.

International participants are also visitors who contribute to hotel stays, food and beverage, transportation, retail and tourism activities. A successful international race can therefore become both a sporting property and a recurring destination-marketing platform.

Rather than attempting to elevate every major Malaysian race, Benjamin believes Malaysia should identify selected events with the strongest potential and develop them consistently as flagship international properties.

“The objective should not simply be to accumulate more Labels. The bigger ambition is for Malaysia to develop races that international runners deliberately put into their calendars.”

As a race technology provider supporting events across ASEAN, CheckPointSpot® believes technology, data, operational standards and participant experience will form an important part of that development alongside wider collaboration across the industry.

The long-term measure of success is simple: when international runners discuss the races they want to experience in Asia, Malaysia should have a name on that list.
